It takes some precipitation for this small feeder stream of Piney Creek to get going, but after a good rain, Mill Branch Falls in Raleigh County comes alive and is quite magnificent!
Mill Branch Falls is located within the Piney Creek Trail System. I’ve highlighted the area of interest in green in the latest map below provided by Andrew Steel of the National Park Service. The easiest way to access it in my opinion is arriving at the Paul Cline soccer complex in Beckley and parking in the parking lot there. From there, head over to the beginning of the Grey Flats Trail South (#7 in the map below). Hike this trail for about a third of a mile until you encounter the Rock Ridge Trail (#12), which will jut to the right. Take that trail and follow for another third of a mile or so until you encounter the Creek Crossing Trail (#3) again to your right. Follow that trail for about a tenth of a mile to the Mill Connector Trail (#9), follow for another tenth of a mile until you arrive at the Beckley Mill Trail (#2). Follow this trail all the way out for 0.4 miles. You’ll see the Mill Branch Trail (#8) to your left after this distance. Take this trail and after about two tenths of a mile, you’ll see a sign that will point you to the falls. After a good rain, you’ll be able to hear the falls easily from this spot.
