Blackwater Falls in Tucker County is possibly the most photographed waterfall in the state – and no wonder! It stands at a whopping 60 feet tall. It is definitely a sight to behold and appreciate, and there are multiple places to view! In addition, there is a trail from the Gentle Trail parking area where you can venture down to creek level, but be cautioned that it is quite dangerous, and that the easy viewing platforms as shown below provide excellent views of the waterfall. The Blackwater River empties into the Cheat River, and like many of its smaller tributaries, the Blackwater River is a blackwater stream, which mean that it gets color in the water from hemlock and spruce trees, which creates a bit of an amber color to the water. You can see this really well in my photos of Elakala Falls, which is very close by.
To access Blackwater Falls, head to the town of Davis, WV in Tucker County. Once you make it to the town, turn onto Route 29 (Blackwater Falls Road) for 1.4 miles. Then turn left onto Canyon Point Road for about 400 feet until you reach a large parking lot. You’ll then be able to see the trail that takes you down to the falls, but you should be able to hear the roar of Blackwater Falls from the parking lot.
