Howell’s Mill is a waterfall located along the Mud River in eastern Cabell County. The calm and tranquil Mud River takes a quick ten feet tall dive down where it continues its course toward the Guyandotte River a few miles down. The area is a popular fishing spot, and the remnants of the old mill building are still there, which is good for unique angles of the fall, however, be careful as the building is not in particular good shape and has been vandalized.
To get to Howell’s Mill, turn onto Howell’s Mill Road in Ona right by Cabell Midland High School on US-60. Traveling east on US-60, it’ll be on your left. You’ll drive out this two lane road for 2.1 miles. Take it slow, as there are a couple of unsuspecting sharp turns. RIGHT before you cross the Mud River over a bridge, there is a gravel road to the left. Take this gravel road, and it’ll take you to a small parking area. You’ll be able to hear the falls from here, and there’s a quick trail to take you down to the river banks. For some reason, I had a tough time finding that gravel road and instead first attempted to access the falls from the other side of the river. It is not accessible from that side, so watch for that gravel road on the left side of the road just before crossing the bridge traveling north.
