I have read that there are several waterfalls along Butcher Branch in Fayette County, however this is the only one I’ve been to. This is the star waterfall on the waterway, and it is a behemoth! I plan on being back in this area to get the waterfalls on this entire waterway very soon.

It’s not the easiest to get to in my opinion. There are multiple ways to go about accomplishing this, but I headed off of Long Point Trail (the trailhead to Long Point Trail is located just southeast of Fayetteville off of WV-9 [Gatewood Road] and off of WV 9-8). I headed off of the Long Point Trail at an intersection with the Fayetteville Trail about a 1/3 mile up the trail, followed Fayetteville Trail down until it meets Butcher Branch, then scurried along a makeshift path down to the falls. It wasn’t an easy go, and I’ve read there are easier routes. Nonetheless, I made it there and I’ve read there are several more nice waterfalls farther down as Butcher Branch falls in elevation toward where it empties into the New River – that’s for another day soon.

Butcher Branch Falls Location

Be a bit careful hiking to this waterfall. I remember it being a bit tricky. Granted, it was the last stop on a day-long trek for me, and I was pretty exhausted, but I remember there being some slick spots and a good bit of rocks as well.
